The Startup Dynamic

The Startup Dynamic

A day in the life of a Sweet Yara staff member: not always easy, but always fulfilling. The thought of growing a startup can be intimidating, but only if you think of it in terms of highly structured roles and rigid expectations about your workplace journey. Some of the most critical aspects to the success of a startup include the willingness of staff to take on flexible roles and the highly variable office environment. For those of us on the Sweet Yara team, this means that the day-to-day workload can include anything from analyzing consumer data to modeling jewelry.

At the end of it all, however, the real nucleus of the work comes from our brainstorming sessions. All of these actionable items are a direct result of the synergy between the different personalities on the team that lead to new strategies and ideas. For instance, what began as Sweet Yara's mission to empower women became a more tangible business model for a social-impact focused business. Through multiple conversations and different perspectives from team members interested in development and socially conscious products, we arrived at a business decision to place the empowerment of girls and women at the core of Sweet Yara through partnerships with women-focused NGOs.

Where do these brainstorming sessions take place? Much like a family, our deep team bonds and our meaningful discussions are formed around a table. This means tossing business ideas back and forth over tea, sandwiches, or tacos. With a startup, you break down the formalities of the normal workplace. Everyone has an investment in each other and in the company, and everyone has to be willing to do work from the top down and the ground up. When you meet as a family to talk over food and warm beverages that's when that brilliant startup dynamic becomes manifest.

Though building a business from the ground up with a small team is extremely challenging, the beauty of a startup workplace is its horizontal structure. You get to take part in dreaming up the company's future, discussing with the team the possibility of Angelina Jolie sporting your jewelry with a twinkle in your eye. You get to challenge yourself with a broad range of responsibilities. Most importantly, however, you get to be part of a family comprised of different personalities but with the same vision in mind.
